liu's taiwanese restaurant: magic sauce

liu's is conveniently located right next to supermarket 2000 in a some mall complex in richmond but it is one of me and my mom's favourite saturday lunch places. its usually pretty empty so the food comes quickly but it sure is delicious. their best thing there is this sauce that they pour over most of their fried items be it the pork chops or chicken leg. its amazing and difficult to describe so i'll just tell you GO TRY IT!

stewed beef with noodle ($7.75): their soup is very good with the right amount of spicy, the noodles are cooked to a good consistency and their beef is not very fat = a good bowl of noodles

deep fried pork chop ($5.75): you see that sauce, thats the best stuff ever

onion pancake with sliced beef roll ($5.95): the pancake is a bit oily making the entire thing heavy

yakiudon: a bit greasy but delicious

soho: super tasty bubble tea & honey toast box!

i went to soho tea house during the summer as a catch up with some friends and we wanted to go mostly because we wanted to try the infamous honey toast box. for those that dont know, its basically a huge square of toast with the middle cut out, baked in some kind of sweetener and them put back into the box then topped with sugary sweets. while we were here i also got their beef noodle, salty peppery chicken and a bubble tea (that was shared) AND TASTED AMAZING.

their beef noodle ($8): i didnt know it was udon ): next time i'm going to try and ask for the regular noodles that come in taiwanese beef noodle. huge portion though!

salty peppery chicken: pretty good but expensive ($6) for the amount given

fire on ice (lychee, peach, mango and strawberry with mango stars $5.50) was a 30 minute wait but tasted so good. a bit expensive but big enough to be shared!

the honey toast box: ($8) we got chocolate but its just the sauce that makes a difference. bread inside was tasty but its mostly for looks.

soirette: summertime sweets

theres nothing like a day out with friends walking down to coal harbour and trying macarons especially at soirette. the best part about these little delights is all the fun you have when trying different flavours. unfortunately, i don't remember much about these macarons except that the texture was not amazing. the flavours were pretty good but it didn't have the perfect crunch when being bit into.

ones that we tried in the store: i only remember hazelnut (my favourite)

a prettier picture

so many to choose from!

brought some home for mom and me.

theres a matcha one thats good, the passionfruit tasted a bit artificial

coco hut: better as takeout

I LOVE HAINANESE CHICKEN AND THEIR OILY RICE. even as a kid i loved it from mui garden but my mom found this small place in richmond where it is so good. they have some kind of sauce that they put on the chicken that gives it such a good flavour but the BEST PART is when you get it as take out and the rice gets soaked in that sauce! i actually had the take out today but was too hungry to take a picture. this is also a great deal at around 8 dollars ($6.85 for take out!)

the chicken!

the rice!

deliciousness (:

takara bune: neighbourhood japanese

takara bune is the best japanese food around the killarney area. my family has been coming here forever even when it was owned by japanese people! the quality of the food has decreased greatly over the years but this place is like a second home. the food is decent (the hot is pretty good and not too much rice on the rolls) and the prices are a bit high but not unreasonable. they have good lunch specials and honestly, some of the best tempura ever!

some pictures from multiple visits:

tuna maki - normal

chicken kaarage - i prefer the pieces over the wings

rainbow roll - not too much rice! and the seafood is pretty fresh

chicken teriyaki - we redeemed this with our stamp card (1 stamp for ever 10$) and it was pretty good. their chicken teriyaki, i actually love, and the bean sprouts soak up the sauce

spicy salmon roll (2 visits) - my go-to roll at almost any japanese restaurant. very good here with a nice serving of salmon and a spicy kick!

house roll (2 visits) - again, pretty good with a lot of filling

one of their dinner boxes (2 visits) - a bit expensive for what you get but their delicious tempura makes up for most of it

obviously i like to order the same things everytime :P

tulalip casino buffet: too full to walk

sometimes when I go to the states (okay always) i have a craving for an abundance of cheap food. when i give in to that craving, i visit the tulalip casino buffet just because its close to the outlet and they have quite a big selection.

their food is pretty good for the price of around $12 per person, being fast turnover and a made to order pasta and mongolian grill. they also alternate between crepes and hand scooped milkshakes.

DEFINITELY a huge meal but at least you get your vegetables in!

their salmon and roast beef are at a carving station but can get a bit tough. they have a pretty big salad selection and LOTS OF CORN!

their chinese items are okay but their ribs were so good. pastas are very filling and heavy but just a little bit is delicious

crepe with berries and whipped cream

the best part: opera cake and nanaimo bar

cheesecake with chocolate sauce

this was only half my dessert...forgot to take pictures of the rest!

mango and coffee ice cream in a fresh waffle bowl!

visit 2:

chocolate cream pie

MORE CORN with fruit, salmon and potstickers

cupcake and bread pudding
